Make more space in your life with these 7 secrets to organizing your schedule and mastering the work-life balance.
Do you feel like you’re constantly juggling life trying to be the best mom, spouse, friend, co-worker, business owner, coach and every other title you see yourself given? Are you like so many of the rest of us with so many balls in the air you’re not sure which to catch and which to let fall? And then find yourself simply hoping they’ll eventually bounce in the same direction? Surely you’ll catch up, right?
Exhausting. That’s what this circus act is.
So the big question is, how do you stop the juggling act and find balance, harmony, and satisfaction in the life you’re really living?
What Is Balance?
Just like time, balance can seem like an ever-fleeting desire that’s out of grasp. But there ARE simple steps to get more of it.
Before we get to the 7 secrets to create more balance in your life, let’s first clarify what balance means. Given the word, it’s often associated with a split of time and duties right down the middle—50/50. Unfortunately, life rarely ever works equally.
The most important thing to do is to let go of trying to be everything to everyone. Instead, accept the fact that balance looks different to everyone and it changes with the seasons of life.
As Courtney Carver of Be More With Less shares in her book Soulful Simplicity, balance can only be achieved by doing less. “Instead of searching for more efficient ways to do it all, do less. Say “no,” and protect your time for what matters most to you. Work with people who want your best, not your busiest. Stop comparing lists, your life, and your love.”
So instead of trying to be the best all of the time, focus on being the best where you are present. If you’re at work, concentrate on getting your work done rather than personal tasks so you can leave it at the end of the day. If you’re at home, be present with your family and friends, and your self-needs. Segment the two from one another and create the balance where these two lives compliment and inspire the other, rather than sneak in and take over.
7 Steps to Create More Balance for a Happier, Healthier You
1. Practice Self-Care
It’s hard to give from an empty vessel. Put focus on practicing daily self-care and filling yourself up so there is more of you to give. Create a morning routine you love, go to the gym or for a walk instead of shopping during lunch, or take a hot bath to calm and reward you for all you accomplished at the end the day. Take time to recharge and refuel.
Trim, trim, trim. Spend time looking at your life with the perspective of what you desire and value and the goals and intentions you wish to achieve. Then take the realities of your life into account. From your schedule, your children’s schedules, your job, appointments, and everything in between, trim the commitments from your calendar or to-do list that don’t align with your values. If you’d rather take the time to watch your daughter’s dance practice instead of ironing a mound of laundry, choose to wear a different top that you can simply spray and shake out the wrinkles. Choose to live with purpose and on purpose.
3. Create a Healthy Mindset
Yes, this means when someone compliments you, you have accept the compliment with grace instead of downplaying or deflecting it. When your co-worker says she like your shoes, there’s no need to reveal they were 50% off. Simply graciously say, “thank you,” and move on. Accepting compliments reminds you to stay focused on the positive, live in line with your values, and choose happiness.
Balance takes planning, and a hard look and realization that you can’t be everything to everyone. It just won’t happen. Planning doesn’t mean just the calendar-stuffing of tasks and to-dos, it also means removing things from your agenda to make more room for what you desire. Plan, trim, and leave room to create space for the life you’re planning for.
5. Expect the Unexpected
We all understand the need to expect the unexpected, because the unexpected happens so often it should just be expected. What a concept!
The hardest part of this reality is the unknown. That’s why planning space in your schedule for the impromptu meeting or appointment or in your budget for the untimely need for new tires or because the roof is leaking. The more you make plans for expecting the unexpected, the less it will throw you off, and help maintain balance.
6. Turn it off
You’re probably assuming we’re just talking about your phone or electronics, but we’re also talking about turning off the never-ending tumble of things going on in your mind. Doing these two things for just 15 minutes a day can be one of the most revitalizing things you can do to achieve balance. The hardest part is simply accepting the quietness and being one with your thoughts rather than your distractions. There’s a lot to learn from living with white space and making room for growth, peace, and satisfaction.
7. Choose Happiness
No matter how crazy, overwhelming, or difficult life seems to be, happiness is always there. You just need to acknowledge and embrace it. Happiness is a choice. Happiness helps create the a harmonious balance even when nothing seems to be balanced at all. It’s like a weight that evens everything out no matter what direction life takes you. Happiness really is a choice. Will you choose it?
Each of these seven tips can lead to a life where you no longer experience schedule shaming, where your schedule doesn’t define you, but instead where you take control of your schedule to create more life balance. There is no even split in life. It’s really about prioritizing, living in line with your values, and then enjoying the balance you create.

In the fast paced world we live in, practicing self-care can sometimes be frowned upon. Naps shouldn’t be looked at as being lazy, but instead as rejuvenating. A long visit with friends shouldn’t be feel like you’re neglecting your to-do list with chit chat, but as a time to connect with those you care about.
