You may find yourself looking at the goals you set at the beginning of the year and realizing you’ve slipped and lost your way. Not to worry! We’re here to jumpstart your goal setting with these 4 easy tips to get back on track
So you got off track. You’ve yet to crack open your planner this month, you’ve slipped back into grabbing take-out instead of cooking at home, and you’re not quite sure what tomorrow even holds.
We’ve all been there.
In fact, we’re pretty sure these “set-backs” are what make us all human. In fact, they could actually be the motivators that make you more successful, so long as you keep on keepin’ on. Because the one thing that separates the most successful people from those who can’t ever seem to make a go of it is the successful never let “set-backs” stop them.
Instead, they’ve mastered the art of restarting, of bouncing back, and resetting to continue pressing on, and here’s how.
4 Tips to Put You Back on Track
1. Have A Brainstorming Session
There’s nothing a little dreaming can’t fix, right? But whether you are a dreamer or not, sometimes just emptying the jumble that’s in your mind onto a sheet of paper can give you the refresh you need. Schedule 20 minutes, pull out a sheet of paper and pen, and let it flow.
2. Choose the Right Work Space
Maybe you like to perch yourself in the hustle and bustle of your favorite coffee shop or maybe you prefer the quiet calm of your office. One secret of highly productive people is honoring the environment they work best in. Take time to test out new locations and figure out what works best for you. Then, if things begin to stagnate again, shake it up and go to a park, a restaurant, or sit at the beach. A simple change of environment can lead to new inspiration.
3. Plan Backwards
Look back on your goals for the last few months. Take note of what went well, what got accomplished and what is yet to achieve. Pick one task, one dream, one direction, and start at the end and work backward. Start by breaking down your goal into small steps you feel you can achieve. Then, set an end date for projects, planning backward by the week to make sure you stay on track to completion.
4. Take Advantage of Breaks
Keep life in balance. There is a time to work and a time to live. Without either one of these and you’re probably going to be left with a life that is less than satisfying. Because hustling more doesn’t necessarily mean better productivity. Make sure you don’t skip the holidays, vacation time or opportunities that allow you to rest, relax, and enjoy the company of those around you. Use this time to refuel and reboot so you have more to give when the work week swings back around.
Master the Restart
Know that there is a lot of the year still left to achieve your goals. Set aside the feelings that you’re already so behind you’ll never catch up and take a deep breath. Put one foot in front of the other, and then just start. Most of the time it doesn’t require a giant leap but one small step done every day. Even slight adjustments can put you back on course. So instead of getting frustrated, learn to master the art of re-starting. Because one simple choice to begin is all it takes to start.
